About Yarn Therapy

In today’s busy world, it’s not always easy to find a place where you can slow down, ask questions, and learn something new—especially when it comes to hands-on skills like knitting and crochet. Sure, there are endless videos, tutorials, and books out there, but nothing beats learning in person, with someone right there to guide you, cheer you on, and help when you hit a snag. That’s exactly why Yarn Therapy was born.

Tara Neher, the heart and hands behind Yarn Therapy, first learned to knit from her grandmother and mother. But it wasn’t until years later—after stumbling upon a cozy local yarn shop while living in Maryland—that she really fell in love with it. The support, the shared laughter, the joy of working through a tricky pattern with a real person next to her—that experience transformed her skills and deepened her passion.

When Tara moved back to Texas, she found herself missing that special little shop and the sense of connection it brought. She also realized just how many people buy yarn at big-box stores without any real guidance—no advice on fiber choices, no help deciphering patterns, no one to ask, “Wait…am I doing this right?” So she decided to change that. That’s how Yarn Therapy came to life—a space where people can come to learn, ask questions, find inspiration, and just be. Whether you're brand new to knitting or crochet or you’ve been at it for decades, Yarn Therapy is here to help you grow your skills, connect with others, and maybe even make a few new friends along the way.

"More than just a shop, Yarn Therapy is a community hub"

Yarn Therapy is a place to gather, create, and share. Just like the knitting circles and quilting bees of the past, we believe in learning together, laughing together, and building something meaningful—not just with yarn, but with each other. Whether you’re taking a class, joining a group stitch session, or just stopping by to chat and work on a project, you’re always welcome here. And don’t be surprised if you’re greeted by Tara—or one of her eight amazing kids—when you walk through the door. So come in, grab your favorite skein, and settle in with a group of fellow yarn geeks. We can’t wait to meet you.

A letter from Tara

"Dear Friends,

Let me be honest—writing about myself isn’t exactly my favorite thing to do. I’d much rather be talking about yarn, teaching a new stitch, or helping you untangle that confusing pattern. But I know it’s important for you to know who’s behind Yarn Therapy, so here goes…I was born and raised right here in Dallas, Texas. While I’ve lived in a few other places, there’s just something about the DFW area that feels like home—it’s where my heart is, and where I always knew I’d come back to. I’m married to the most amazing man who treats me like a princess (even on the days when I’m wearing leggings and covered in yarn fuzz), and I’m also a proud mama to eight incredible kids. We’re a blended family—he had three, I had three, and then surprise! Along came a set of twins. So yes, we were the Brady Bunch… and now we’re Eight is Enough! Life in our house is full of laughter, chaos, and a whole lot of love—and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I first learned to knit and crochet as a child, taught by the women in my family. But it wasn’t until my thirties, when I walked into a cozy little yarn shop in Maryland, that it clicked. A kind teacher showed me how to read gauge (who knew?!), and suddenly a whole new world opened up—I went from scarves and blankets to sweaters and socks. I even changed my knitting style to continental, which totally transformed my process. More than that, I discovered something deeper: knitting and crocheting became my therapy. With a busy household and the everyday stress that comes with it, my craft gave me a way to slow down, breathe, and center myself. Over time, I saw how many others felt the same way—and how many people wanted to learn but didn’t know where to start. That’s when I remembered something my grandfather used to say: “If you can’t find what you need, create it.” So that’s exactly what I did. I created Yarn Therapy as a space where people can come to learn, to create, to unwind, and to connect. It’s a place to celebrate the beautiful, calming, creative therapy that is knitting and crochet. Whether you're picking up needles for the first time, revisiting an old hobby, or just needing a little encouragement, you’re welcome here. Thanks for taking the time to get to know me a bit. I truly can’t wait to meet you, share stories, swap stitches, and help build a community where creativity and kindness are always in the air.

With love and yarn,

Tara Neher, Founder of Yarn Therapy"
